MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall confirmed Monday a death investigation is underway following the discovery of the body of Patrick Murphy, 50, of Pike Road.

Murphy, who is the twin brother of Montgomery Police Chief Kevin Murphy, was found dead by deputies Sunday. Marshall would not release any additional details surrounding the death pending results of an autopsy.

Murphy's body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science where the autopsy will be performed.

The day prior to Murphy's death, he turned himself into the Montgomery County Jail on a charge of felony leaving the scene of an accident.

WSFA 12 News first reported Murphy's arrest on a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident on May 20. The arrest was the result of two accidents on Chantilly Parkway on the night of May 19.

According to Montgomery Department of Public Safety Director Chris Murphy, who is not related to either Patrick or Kevin Murphy, the charge was changed to a felony after his office asked for oversight from Alabama State Troopers and District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

"When they reviewed the facts of the case, they indicated that because there were injuries involved in these accidents that it would be more appropriate to charge with a Class C felony of leaving the scene of an accident as opposed to the misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident," Chris Murphy said.

According to the traffic crash reports, Murphy was driving a Nissan Frontier on May 19 when he hit the back of a Hyundai Accent that was stopped at a red light on Chantilly Parkway at Ryan Road at 8 p.m. According to the crash report, Patrick Murphy left the scene after the collision.

According to a second crash report, three minutes after the first crash, at 8:03 p.m., Patrick Murphy hit the back of a Honda Odyssey that was stopped in traffic on Chantilly Parkway between Vaughn Road and Timber Creek Drive.

The collision caused a chain reaction with two additional vehicles, a Volkswagen Jetta and a Lexus GS300, that were stopped in traffic. Four people, including Patrick Murphy, were transported to Baptist South Medical Center after the collisions.

According to the traffic crash reports, the officer on the scene believed alcohol was a factor in these two crashes. Chris Murphy said Friday that evidence was still at the state toxicology lab..
