Local veterans speak about VA secretary's resignation

Posted: Updated:

Veterans Affairs Secretary, Eric Shinseki, has resigned amid numerous problems at veteran's health facilities across the country. Local Veterans called Eric Shinseki's resignation, a classic political move, a move they're afraid won't help them get their benefits any faster.

"Somebody's got to start caring," said veteran, Warren Harmon.

Veterans we spoke with said Shinseki didn't deliver on his promises to straighten things out at the VA, and his resignation was a step in the right direction.

"I can't feel sorry for him, because as far as I am concerned he never did his job," said Harmon.

There is a saying about the VA among some veterans.

"The VA, all they do is deny deny deny and hope you die," said Harmon.

Warren Harmon served over 30 years in the military.

"It's like they don't want to give me anything, and in the first place they aren't giving it to me, it's something I've earned," said Harmon

Harmon says he was exposed to dangerous chemicals in Vietnam and his claims for medical assistance for the exposure, have been lost or denied.

"That's the thanks I get from my government," said Harmon.

Veterans aren't getting the quality healthcare they deserve according to Veteran Joseph Bongiovanni.

"People come from all over the world to this country to get treated and our veterans are the last ones to get taken care of," said Veteran, Joseph Bongiovanni.

"If I want to see my private doctor I can call him up and get an appointment that very same day, or maybe within the next couple of days, if you go to the VA it takes months, two months, three months," said Bongiovanni.

This kind of care has upset some veterans.

"I served my country, but I feel my country isn't serving me," said Harmon.
