LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Domestic Violence Unit in the Shoals has a new partner. Friday, the University of North Alabama officially joined the force, aiding in its efforts to end domestic violence in the Shoals.

The new partnership with UNA allows agents to work with college students and other non-profit organizations to assist and educate young adults on the many forms of domestic violence.

Members of the Domestic Violence Unit and non-profit organizations met on campus Friday afternoon to make the partnership officials. The UNA officer was also given a patrol car donated to the Domestic Violence Unit by the State Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

The Domestic Violence Unit started with just one officer in 2010 and continued to grow. It's a collaborative effort to help improve victim safety, reduce attacks, and educate the public. Local agents work closely with local law enforcement and area non-profits such as Safeplace to take a stand against domestic violence.

"One of the primary focuses that we have is to educate both young men and young women about sexual violence, sexual assault, domestic violence generally, and do whatever we can through education to reduce the number of incidents that occur," said Dr. William Cale, UNA President.

The Domestic Violence Unit currently works out of the Lauderdale County District Attorney's Office. They are working on finding a new location to provide easier access for victims and members of the community.
