(WAFF) -

Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL) is calling for the Department of Justice to investigate the recent Department of Veterans Affairs scandal.

In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Appropriations, along with Chairman Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), said they are deeply troubled by the allegations that veterans may have suffered, or perhaps even died, due to lack of medical care as officials at the VA "kept patients languishing on secret waiting lists."

On Friday, President Barack Obama announced the resignation of VA Secretary General Eric Shinseki.

Operations at the Department of Veterans Affairs came into question after reports of long wait times at healthcare facilities became an issue, especially in Phoenix where dozens of people allegedly died as a result.

An inspector general's report detailed improper scheduling procedures throughout the VA hospital system.

In his their letter, Mikulski and Shelby said, "This tragedy has gone on far too long. Our veterans deserve justice not more delays."
