HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

With the isolated storms that have crossed the Tennessee Valley comes the renewed threat of lightning.

Lightning is the second leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. There have been four deaths caused by lightning so far this year.

Remember: If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.

Emergency officials said if you are outside when a storm approaches, seek shelter immediately.

"You don't want to be in any open areas, obviously," said David Glassman with Madison Fire & Rescue. "You want to stay away from trees and metal fences. The best thing to do is get inside a sturdy, structured building."

Glassman said it is best to wait 30 minutes after hearing the last sound of thunder before heading outside.
