SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

A Sheffield man is behind bars facing a list of charges after police said he cut a woman's throat.

It happened early Saturday morning at a home on Southwest 13th Street. Investigators credit patrol officers for helping save the woman's life; they said officers were able to secure the scene and start first aid and CPR before medics arrived.

Bobbie Dean Dickerson faces charges including attempted murder and kidnapping.

Police said when the victim refused to have sex with him, Dickerson began assaulting her and trapped her in her bedroom for nearly four hours. Investigators said she caught Dickerson's attention when the woman tried to make her escape.

"As she was attempting to escape, she made it through the front bedroom and attempted to exit a window," said investigator Ray Terry. "At that time he caught her, threw her down… and then cut her throat on the right and left side."

Terry said the woman was transported to Helen Keller Hospital before being flown to Huntsville Hospital for surgery. She was later released.

Dickerson remains in the Sheffield Jail.
