FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Rising 10th-graders got to leave their mark Tuesday at the new Freshmen Center at Florence City Schools.

Current ninth-grade students were given markers and allowed to leave messages on the floor inside the multipurpose room before crews lay down tile.

School leaders said it's a way to give students ownership of the building and a chance for them to leave a legacy for years to come.

"Due to Mother Nature, we were not able to bring them over to start out their school year hear or to finish their school year here," said Principal Roderick Sheppard. "We were able to come up with a plan that would allow them to leave their mark. It's been a great thing."

The new Florence Freshman Center is set to be completed in three weeks for staff to begin moving in.
