LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Limestone County is the first county school system in the state to put officers in every school.

Superintendent Dr. Thomas Sisk said putting officers in all campuses this school year is the right thing to do, adding that the mere presence of deputies deters some things from happening.

The decision to put Limestone County sheriff's deputies in the elementary schools came just after the tragedy at Sandy Hook. They already had officers in the high schools.

To do it, the school system put up half of the $240,000 cost for the year. The county paid the other half.

Sisk said they will begin an end-of-year review as school lets out for summer break on Thursday. He said there have been cases this year where school resource officers helped students who were at risk outside of school.

"Through their training, they determined that the child was in a bad situation, and a meth lab was closed down," said Dr. Sisk. "We are all familiar with the story of a student that came in and was apparently being abused physically. They knew what to look for."

Another benefit of added officer coverage is that if something were to happen near a school, for example a robbery, students have that extra safety near them.

"Parents are a lot of times concerned when they send their kids off to school," said Sheriff Mike Blakely. "Here I think you find we have safe schools, and the fact that we have an officer in every one of those schools... guarantees that we're doing everything we can to ensure nothing's going to happen."

Sisk said the program will cost less for the next school year because they won't have to pay startup costs, such as money to train retired officers and providing them with radios and computers.
