HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Opponents of Common Core standards used in schools rallied in Huntsville Tuesday morning.

It was the kickoff to a statewide bus tour raising awareness about the issue. Opponents said it is a federal intrusion into the schools. They said state and local school boards have been intimidated into going along with Common Core.

The organizer, John Rice of the Alabama Foundation for Limited Government, said state schools are fine under the old standards.

"If it's not broke, I don't think we need to fix it," said Rice. "So, if Common Core is a problem to a parent or an individual, that's what's important. If it's not important to a school district, it's too tied to money."

Among the other speakers was a retired teacher who claims the last few years of her career were miserable because of Common Core and its non-stop testing.

Common Core supporters dismiss these concerns. They said Common Core is being distorted and parents are being misinformed for political purposes.

The Common Core website has a prominent page dedicated to dispelling myths around the standards. The site states teachers were heavily involved in the process from the beginning.

It also says Common Core is not a mandated curriculum, but rather a set of shared goals. Local and state school boards decide the content; teachers decide how to convey it to students.

The site dismisses concerns about federal intrusion, claiming Common Core is a state-led program with no federal governance.
