ALABAMA (WAFF) -

Over the Memorial Day weekend, two young boys drowned in two different lakes in Alabama.

On Sunday, 7-year-old Joshua Alexander and his 5-year-old brother were wading in Smith Lake in an area called Cable Crossings when Joshua slipped into deeper water and drowned. Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris told our Birmingham sister station that the adults were loading the car and didn't see Joshua go under the water.

On Monday in Pell City, a 5-year-old boy drowned at Lakeside Park during a family gathering. Pell City police said a nurse was at the park and began CPR, but the boy was pronounced dead when he got to the hospital.

As the summer season begins, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reminds people that drowning remains the leading cause of death in children younger than 4. You can find a list of safety reminders here.
