PELL CITY, AL (WBRC) -

A 5-year-old boy drowned at Lakeside Park in Pell City late Monday afternoon during a family gathering, according to Pell City police.

The family has confirmed his name is D.J. Johnson. He attended South Hampton Elementary School, a Birmingham city school, and would have graduated from pre-k on Tuesday, May 27. Family members say D.J. was supposed to give the welcome at the graduation ceremony.

Authorities were called to the park on the shore of Logan Martin Lake at 4:52 p.m. Monday when the boy was discovered submerged in the water, a department spokesperson tells FOX6 News.

The family says D.J. stepped into a drop off in the water and drowned, but no one saw him go under. He was discovered after someone stepped on his body in the water. A nurse from Children's of Alabama was at the park and began CPR until first responders arrived, according to police.

Johnson was taken St. Vincent's St. Clair where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
