Many Lawrence County residents observed Memorial Day in Moulton at the county courthouse.

American Legion Post 25 hosts the event each year. The names of veterans from Lawrence County who were killed in the line of duty between World War I and the present day were read aloud.

Family members of those killed were also honored as the service paid homage to them.

Auxillary President Tommie Hollingsworth shared her feelings with the crowd that she fears something is lost when it comes to the purpose behind Memorial Day.

"This is not a holiday for self-seeking pleasure," Hollingsworth said. "Instead, our thoughts should turn to the sacrifices made by our fellow patriots and the necessity for us to carry on the burdens of citizenship and responsibility that they have passed along to us."

At a wreath-laying ceremony during the event, Joe Henderson and his grandson paid tribute to the elder Henderson son, Barry, who was killed in the line of duty in Iraq.

The treatment of veterans is an important topic on this solemn day. Congressman Robert Aderholt feels the government has let its guard down in the wake of the VA scandal.

"We just passed a bill before I left Washington to hold the employees at the Veterans Administration accountable," said Aderholt. "Right now, [they] were not even able to fire some of the folks that were at the Veterans Administration who are not doing their job, and we have to have accountability, and that's what we're trying to get."

Aderholt said those employees need to be fired and replaced with people willing to do their job.
