BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A special event was hosted by the Alabama Veterans Memorial Foundation on Sunday to honor all of our veterans both past and present. This event is held twice a year at the Alabama Veterans Memorial Park, once on Memorial Day and again on Veterans Day.

It's called the Stepstone Dedication Ceremony.  Here, veterans from all over the state of Alabama are honored.   Families can purchase these four by eight inch bricks and have their loved ones name placed on them.  Each stepstone is a brick that has been engraved with the veteran's name, rank, and branch.

Ann Hughes just recently purchased one for her brother who passed away in January.
"He never came back to Alabama, but he was never forgotten.  This is the only way we knew to recognize him locally, his service here," said Hughes.

After her brothers service he stayed in California and never moved back to Alabama.

To learn more about the Alabama Veterans Memorial Foundation log onto their website at www.alabamaveterans.org.You can also inquire about purchasing a stepstone by emailing avstepstone@gmail.com
