HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

When Robert 'RC' Adams woke up around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, his thoughts were not on the upcoming Memorial Day holiday Monday, but rather on what he would do at church later Sunday morning.

"I was thinking about what I was going to speak about," Adams said.

Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church in Huntsville held a special service Sunday morning honoring service members past and present, including Adams, a 100-year-old veteran who served in World War II.

‘RC' was surprised during his appearance with the presentation of a pin commemorating his service in WWII, which he should have received decades ago.

Retired Colonel Steven Froniabarger researched Adams' military records and discovered Adams never received the pin he earned.

"This is my way of giving back to the community," Col. Froniabarger said. "I told the family earlier, I should be thanking you because it's spiritually nourishing for me."

Adams said he was happy to receive his pin Sunday, and that the experience was incredible.

"It made me feel 50 years younger," said Adams.

The church presented Adams with an American flag along with the pin. He immediately passed the flag on to his wife, saying that he didn't know where he would be without her.

Also during the program were the singing of the National Anthem and a video tribute in memory of veterans among the congregation who had passed away.
