HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The city of Huntsville issued a "Request for Proposal" this week to build a mixed-use development at the site of the former Holiday Inn Select across from Big Spring Park.

The 6.28 acre property sits at the intersection of Lowe Avenue, Williams Avenue, and Monroe Street near the Von Braun Center.

Mayor Tommy Battle said developers from across the region are showing an interest in the downtown area.

"We have built in more flexibility into the RFP to see what developers might come up with that would be an asset to the city," said Battle.

The request calls for "a distinctive and sustainable mixed use development" with elements that may include lodging, residential, ground floor retail, office, parking and open space.

Proposals must be submitted by 2 p.m. on June 24, 2014 through Huntsville's department of Procurement Services at http://www.huntsvilleal.gov/procurement/index.php.
