COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals man pleaded guilty to charges of rape, burglary, and robbery in court on Thursday.

Tavares Terrell Garner was arrested in connection with a violent rape at the Colbert Square Apartments. Authorities said the attack happened in Oct. 2013.

According to investigators, Garner claimed he was looking for someone and when the victim opened the door to talk him, he forced his way into the apartment and sexually assaulted her. Authorities said Garner forced the woman outside naked and then stole car and cell phone.

A judge gave Garner a life sentence for each charge, to be served concurrently.

Assistant District Attorney Kyle Brown said he is happy the victim will not have to re-live what happened in front of a grand jury.

"It was a very strong case, a very good investigation, and we're pleased the victim didn't have to go through a trial, and we were able to get a life sentence," Brown said.
