SECTION, AL (WAFF) -

The coach of the high school football team in Section has been charged with driving under the influence.

Troopers said Joey Kirby faces three charges including reckless driving, open container, and DUI. They said further charges are pending.

According to troopers, Kirby was clocked doing 91 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone on Alabama Highway 71 in the Rosalie community around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Kirby was stopped, which is when troopers said they found him with an open container of alcohol.

Superintendent Kenneth Harding said this is the first infraction he's had with Kirby since he was hired nine years ago. Harding said he has served as coach at Section for approximately two years.

The superintendent said it's always a disappointment to hear of incidents like this, and plans to meet with the coach as soon as possible.

"He made a poor choice, made a bad decision," said Harding. "I'm sure he regrets it. We hate it; certainly not the image that we want to portray for our people. I'm sure it's not what Coach Kirby wants to portray for his."

Kirby's arrest came at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning; he must stay in jail for 24 hours before posting bond.
