FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

Florence police said one of their officers saved a woman from a house fire on Monday.

Police said Officer Art Stephenson saved the life of a Florence woman after he responded to an alarm call on the 100 block of McKnight Circle after 8 a.m. When he arrived, he said he found a disoriented woman inside the home, which was filled with smoke.

According to police, the woman was cooking when she became disoriented, which led to a kitchen fire that caused the alarm to go off.

"She was very lucky," said Sgt. Keith Robinson. "Fire officials pointed out that fire was at its flash point when Officer Stephenson arrived."

After removing the woman from the home, police said Stephenson went back in to make sure no one else was inside. The woman was taken to the local hospital for smoke inhalation.
