HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The judge overseeing the process to desegregate Huntsville City Schools made an important ruling Tuesday.

The case will no longer be handled as a class-action lawsuit. The original filing of the case did not designate it as a class-action suit.

As a result, the attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund will no longer be party to the case.

Because of a long-standing desegregation order, Huntsville City Schools must obtain federal approval before making any zoning changes.

The Department of Justice is fighting Huntsville's recently-submitted plan to make zoning changes.
