Deadline extended for carriers to apply for Shoals airport service

Posted: Updated:

The deadline for airlines interested in providing air service to the airport in Muscle Shoals has been extended for two weeks, giving companies more time to submit their bids.

No specific names of interested parties have been released, but airport director Barry Griffith said Tuesday there are several who have expressed interest in recent weeks.

In April, Silver Airways announced its decision to discontinue service in the Shoals, leaving airports like Muscle Shoals, Tupelo and other small airports to find a new provider.

Griffith said he is working closely with local leaders and potential providers to make sure they find the perfect fit for the Shoals. In the meantime, he said the airport has received a non-compliance letter from the Department of Transportation that could take away their enrollment in the Essential Air Service program.

Griffith said they are in the first phase of their reprieve and hopes the data will speak for itself as to why travel numbers have dropped in the Shoals – citing delays and cancellations.
