To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. CULLMAN, AL (WBRC) -

Cullman County school leaders have selected Dr. Craig Ross as their first appointed superintendent.

The board of education met at 5 p.m. on Tuesday to replace retiring Superintendent Billy Coleman. Ross has been the principal at Robertsdale High School in Robertsdale in Baldwin County. He received his PhD from Auburn University.

Ross released this statement to FOX6 News upon his appointment:

"My family and I could not be more excited tonight! I am so honored to be named Cullman County Superintendent. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the children, teachers, administrators and community of Cullman County. I came home from my interview and told my family that Cullman was where we need to be, we have been praying about it ever since! We cannot wait to join your community and start meeting everyone."

The other candidates considered were:

Dr. Brandon Payne, Vinemont High School principal (Cullman County)

Dr. Jason Wright, director of student services/federal programs (Lee County)

Dr. Elisabeth Davis, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Tuscaloosa City Schools

Dr. William McCown, principals' center coordinator at Northwest Georgia RESA

Payne, Wright and Ross were considered finalists for the position. In a 4-3 vote, Ross was voted in.

"This is a great thing and we have to be positive for our kids," said board chairman, Chris Carter.

Carter says he is ready to see Ross step into the position, but not everyone was ready to vote him in at Tuesdays board meeting.

"Disappointed. Wasn't my top choice but, hey, we'll move forward and I'm sure he'll do a great job," said board member Randy Hasenbein.

In an email to Fox 6 Dr. Ross said he was thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the children, teachers, administrators and community of Cullman County.

"I came home from my interview and told my family that Cullman was where we need to be. We have been praying about it ever since!" said Ross.

"I know everybody may not be so with their candidate, but we've got to do what's best for this system and we've got to be positive," said Carter.

Dr. Ross will begin his new position July 1st.

The position was previously an elected one but in 2013, the state legislature approved a request from the board to transition to an appointed superintendent. According to the School Superintendents of Alabama, only 37 of the 136 school systems elect a superintendent.
