HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Prepare for detours and slow crawls around Huntsville for the next few months.

Public works will focus on resurfacing neighborhood streets that are in bad shape after a rough winter season.

After evaluating the streets in the worst shape, crews will resurface close to 70 roads with an estimated $3.1 million earmarked for the project.

According to Huntsville City Councilman Bill Kling, this project depletes the entire roads budget for the year, but it is worth to the citizens.

"For the past five years, the council has successfully amended the budget to dedicate a portion to resurfacing neighborhood roads throughout the city," said Kling.

Every mile completed for just one lane comes with a $30,000 price tag for asphalt, equipment, and labor.

"We go through a competitive bid process and that's the best price that we get, and I think that compares favorably to other cities around Alabama," said Kling.
