TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

Law enforcement officers all across the state will have an increased presence on Alabama roadways heading into the holiday weekend as part of the Click It or Ticket initiative.

Officers in Northwest Alabama gathered in Tuscumbia's Spring Park Monday to discuss this year's campaign. They believe a number of fatalities could have been avoided if the driver and/or passengers were wearing their seat belts.

Law enforcement officials agree – there has been a lot of focus and education on the dangers of distracted driving, which includes texting. They worry drivers forget about the simple act of strapping in before they put the car in drive.

Officers said they will be out in force, not just this weekend, but throughout the summer to help educate and enforce those laws.

"I think people are getting a little bit complacent about the fact that they've not been involved in a crash," said Trooper Curtis Summerville. "I don't think they understand the full impact or complexities of being in a car crash."

The Click It or Ticket campaign runs now through June 1, and officers said they will be conducting safety checkpoints as well heading into the holiday weekend.
