HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville police had to chase down a driver they said was going the wrong way on Memorial Parkway early Monday morning.

Officers said they first noticed the man when they saw him driving southbound on the Parkway in the northbound lane. Because Huntsville police won't drive the wrong way during a chase, they said they followed him on the other side of the road.

Authorities said the driver eventually got all the way down to Martin Road, did a U-turn and then started to go north in the southbound lane. When he got to University Drive, though, police said he hit some stop sticks they had put out, which blew out some of his tires.

Police ended up arresting him without incident. Officers said he was very intoxicated.

A report released by the Alabama Department of Transportation said nearly four percent of fatal crashes are caused by vehicles driving the wrong way. In 2011, there were more than 127,000 wrecks in Alabama. 780 of them involved a driver on the wrong side of the road. 24 of those wrecks were fatal.
