SOMERVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

New Salem Baptist Church has been in existence longer than Alabama has been a state. Their 200th anniversary on Sunday was good reason for the congregation to celebrate.

The church was founded May 18 1814, when Salem Indian Mission joined with Center Point Church in Somerville. Sunday's service included a former pastor as guest speaker, a pot-luck lunch, and music from a local group.

A number of the church's former pastors attended and were honored during the service. A representative from the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission was also on hand, and presented the church with a special certificate thanking the church for its 200 years of service.

Current pastor Eric Thomas said the church has been a focal point in the community since its inception.

"Not many churches are able to last this long and have the records to prove they've been around," said Thomas. "It's a really good day."

Thomas said the church will continue to stand the test of time, and he hopes future generations will be on-hand for the church's 300th anniversary.
