Huntsville Utilities billing for under-charge error

A $1.3 million billing error resulted in additional charges to the bills of many Huntsville Utilities customers.

Many customers reported seeing a "miscellaneous" adjustment to their April invoice.

Officials said there was an error made in the billing office, whereby customers were under-charged between April 3-25. They said this was due to a human error and affected about 80 percent of their customers. Residential customers should see around $8-15 added to their bill to make up for what they should have seen on the previous bill.

From April 3, 2014, to April 25, 2014, Huntsville Utilities electric customers were incorrectly billed per kilowatt-hour.  For our residential customers, the correct rates are:

First 1400 kilowatt hours at $0.08979;

Additional kilowatt hours at $0.09794

By taking the total electric consumption on your April invoice and multiplying by $0.00817, that amount is represented as a miscellaneous charge shown on your current bill.  Other rate classes have slightly different rates, but the difference was very close to the residential miscellaneous charge per kilowatt hour.  This error involves a rate regulated by TVA, and therefore these funds must be recovered.  Most residential customers were under-billed between $8 and $15; however some customers will notice higher adjustments.  Huntsville Utilities will work with customers that have difficulty paying their bill due to the miscellaneous charge.  Any customer needing assistance should contact Huntsville Utilities at 256-535-1200 as soon as possible.  We apologize for the error and any inconvenience caused.  We are taking steps to ensure this error does not reoccur in the future.  Huntsville Utilities values the opportunity to serve you, and we strive to provide the best customer service possible.
