HPD: Drivers, passengers must all Click It or Ticket

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police Department is warning drivers to prepare for checkpoint stops over the days leading up to Memorial Day weekend, as the force participates in the national Click It or Ticket initiative.

Since March, HPD officers have made 44 arrests for motorists driving under the influence, seven felony arrests, 21 misdemeanor arrests, issued more than 1,000 citations and impounded close to 50 vehicles.

Officials said that motorists who approach a checkpoint area should be prepared to provide a driver's license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Most inspections take less than 45 seconds to complete.

HPD uses "Hot Spot" locations provided by state officials when selecting areas for enhanced enforcement. The locations have been researched as directly related to previous DUI-involved crashes.

The following list of locations designated as Hot Spot locations includes, but is not limited to:

  • Drake Avenue
  • Bob Wallace Avenue
  • University Drive
  • Memorial Parkway
  • Bailey Cove Road
  • Weatherly Road
  • Andrew Jackson Way
  • California Street
  • Sparkman Drive
  • Pulaski Pike
  • Winchester Road
  • Moores Mill Road

Officers remind motorists and passengers to be buckled up; both can be cited for non-compliance with state law.

The Click It Or Ticket initiative runs May 19 – June 1.
