Latest on SCMPD chief search, investigation

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Chatham County District Attorney's office now has all the goods, so to speak. They will take over all the information gathered by the City of Savannah's hired firm.

It will be District Attorney Meg Heap's decision ultimately if the information presented, along with her office's investigation, could mean more charges of a criminal nature could be on the way against the police department, and even the former head of the department , the now retired Chief Willie Lovett.

Lovett said he was not aware of the latest report from MNDI detailing obstruction and interference by him and his command staff, as well as a loss of nearly 200 officers due to an atmosphere of favoritism.

He had no other comment.

The City of Savannah is looking to the future with recommendations from the report on how to improve. They will let the next police chief implement those changes.

80 people have applied for the job so far. The last day to apply is Monday.

While the city focuses on hiring a new police chief, there are at least 14 former and current officers who are waiting in the wings, curious to see what happens next.

Their lawyer, Will Claiborne, isn't convinced the report Thursday was complete - with 14 claims against the city and police department still unanswered.

"If they included everything they would have to recognize the claims we brought against them have merit...and once we go to court they will have to tell the truth...the whole truth and nothing but the truth," Claiborne said.
