SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) -

Sheffield Police Officer Bobby Inman was suspended without pay pending a hearing with the city's Civil Service Board, according to his attorney Billy Underwood.

Underwood said his client attempted to take a man into custody when the situation escalated. He said Inman used chemical spray and his taser to arrest the man. Then, Underwood said, the man pulled the officer to the ground and got into a fight, fearing his life. Underwood said Inman then pulled his gun on the man.

Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray couldn't release much on the incident because it's a personnel issue, and is set to go before the Civil Service Board. The chief did confirm he suspended the officer without pay, and recommended he be terminated. Chief Ray said the incident was caught on tape and brought to his attention by another officer.

"The supervisor brought it to my attention," said Chief Greg Ray. "After watching it, I felt it did not fall within our use of force policy, so based on that we conducted an internal investigation."
