The number one thing you need to do is monitor them and from reports that's what this New York family did however it was the type of bounce house the kids were playing in that could be partly to blame.

Albany Space Walk owner, Dan Hill, says inflatables purchased at a discount store are usually very light  in weight and are paired with small stakes typically less than a foot in length. Hill says parents have to be careful when using these, especially when winds pick up because it can lift the house.

Space Walk inflatables weigh between 225 pounds to 700 pounds and are equipped with 24 inch stakes. It takes 2 men to install using 4 pound sledge hammers

"We use 10, 12, 14 inch stakes but even these, you get 25-35 mile winds it could do that, it could come out of the ground," Hill said. "We've never had one do that but it have seen that happen."

Even the number of children playing inside needs to be monitored, too many can not only hurt others by falling onto each other but the house can collapse.

A study done in 2010 shows that every 45 minutes a child suffers from an inflatable caused injury. Hill feels it can be avoided by using proper tools, watch the weather and to use bounce houses that are sturdy, with reliable stakes.
