DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An Etowah County man is accused of abusing someone who is unable to care for themselves.

50-year-old Michael Dewayne Franklin of Gadsden was indicted by a grand jury in DeKalb County on charges of abuse of a protected person.

The incident happened at a home off Brown Street in the Powell community where Franklin was an employee. The home is among several operated as a group home for the mentally handicapped by Haymon Homes.

Prosecutors said Franklin physically assaulted a resident there. Because the victim is a protected person, the charge is a felony.

Company officials declined comment Thursday, but said Franklin was fired from his position and the department of Human Resources was called in to investigate. Following the completion of that investigation, the case was presented to the grand jury in April.

Franklin remains in the DeKalb County Jail on $15,000 bond.
