HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A once run-down park in Huntsville looks brand-new. Children broke in the swings and slides at Cavalry Hill Playground on Thursday.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said six years ago, city leaders began evaluating the city's public parks. He said the state of Cavalry was sad, but unfortunately the city didn't have the money to fix it up.

A community member took it upon herself to get to work, and brought the Huntsville school board and the city together to make things happen.

Mayor Battle said they created something that is now an asset to the community.

"It's a joint partnership. The school board put in $25,000, we put in $25,000 plus some services, and we ended up with a great park made for kids to play in," Battle said.

The park includes a basketball park alongside the playground, which sits on Fairbanks Street in Northwest Huntsville.
