KILLEN, AL (WAFF) -

A Shoals woman was arrested and charged with elder abuse and neglect after investigators said she let her sister-in-law lay on the floor for weeks.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Office got a medical assist call at a home on Lakeshore Court in Killen.

Investigators said Maria Springer tried to get her sister-in-law, 57-year-old Pamela Springer, on the couch, but she claimed Pamela fell again. Pamela Springer laid on the floor for three to four weeks, often going to the bathroom on herself.

Investigators found visible bed sores on the victim when they arrived. They said Maria claimed her sister-in-law didn't want her to call for help.

"Her story says the reason she didn't call is because Pam didn't want her to, but she had got tired of listening to her complain and finally decided to call 911," said Lauderdale County District Attorney Richard Richey.

Pamela Springer was taken to the hospital on April 30 when Maria called for assistance, and died there on May 14.

The investigator said Pamela was unable to eat, even though Maria said she prepared meals for her.

"Since she laid there three to four weeks, the sores on her were just unbelievable," said Richey. "I've never seen anybody in that bad of shape."

Depending on autopsy results, charges could be upgraded against Maria Springer, who remains in the Lauderdale County Jail on $5,000 bond.
