NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

City officials broke ground Wednesday on a new roundabout that promises to improve a challenging and often congested intersection.

Mayor Karl Dean and other city officials grabbed their ceremonial shovels at the junction of 46th Avenue North and Murphy Road in Sylvan Park.

Plans call for a new roundabout with pedestrian access and on-street parking to be complete by the end of the year.

Right now the roads meet at an "off-set" intersection, meaning the traffic light must cycle through each side of the intersection individually.

The new design will eliminate the need for a signal and allow drivers to move through the circle continuously.

Early plans for the project drew objections from many business owners in the popular neighborhood. Parking spaces were already at a premium, and many feared losing more spots to construction.

All sides eventually settled on a design with includes landscaping upgrades and on-street parking spots.

"I think it's going to be a draw for the neighborhood especially for the greenway that they are doing. It's going to be more pedestrian friendly," said Krista Miller, who owns Star Bagel at the intersection.

"Hopefully parking isn't going to be as big of an issue as it has been. Cross your fingers," she said.

City leaders are also considering it a win-win.

"It's going to be a great amenity for the neighborhood, for the community center, the golf course and also provide some parking fixes and outdoor dining opportunities for all the restaurants down here," said Metro Councilmember Jason Holleman.
