LAGRANGE, GA (WTVM) -

The American Red Cross is holding two "Walk an Hour in My Vest" information sessions on Thursday, May 29 for people interested in learning more about volunteering.

The first session is from noon until 1 p.m. at the LaGrange office and the second session is from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. at the Newnan office.

Prospective volunteers can call 706-884-5818 or visit GA3RiversRedCross.com to register.

"The Red Cross is looking for people who have the desire to help others," said Jessica McFadden, disaster program manager, Georgia Three Rivers Chapter. "If you've watched the Red Cross respond to disasters and wondered what it would be like to be a Red Cross worker, we encourage you to come to one of our free volunteer information sessions."

The "Walk an Hour in My Vest" information sessions will cover the steps to become an official volunteer, the different opportunities to help the Red Cross and how the Red Cross responds to local and regional disasters. No prior experience is necessary.  Training will be provided to disaster volunteers.

"Our chapter responds to an average of one emergency every other day, so we need teams in each of the ten counties we serve to come to the aid of people who may have lost everything," said McFadden. "Becoming a Red Cross volunteer gives people the tools and training to support both large and small disaster relief efforts."

In addition to disaster relief volunteers, the Georgia Three Rivers Chapter encourages nurses, mental health professionals and people with a background or an interest in public relations, social services or casework, and office support to participate. People who would like to sign up for one of the "Walk an Hour in My Vest" information sessions should visit the Chapter blog GA3RiversRedCross.com or call 706-884-5818 to register.

The Georgia Three Rivers Chapter serves Carroll, Coweta, Haralson, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup & Upson Counties.
