Drowning victim in canoe accident identified

Posted: Updated:

William Richardson, 74, drowned Tuesday after a canoe he was fishing in capsized, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

Richardson and another man were at Gem Lakes around 3 p.m. when the two were trying to pull up the anchor, Carlton said. That's when the boat overturned.

Neighbors said they're shocked.

"I am a little surprised," Katherine Lane said, "I swim here fairly regularly and things like this don't usually happen."

Carlton said life jackets were on board, but the men weren't wearing them.

"I think because there's no lifeguard, people need to know their limits. Use life saving equipment," Lane said.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Coroner's Office are investigating the incident.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning in New berry, S. C.
