DeKalb County police ask public for help catching murder suspects

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS46) -

DeKalb County police aren't sure who or where the people are who shot and killed a 9-month-old child last week, but they have arrested several suspects connected to the violent case.

"I am asking the community at large to assist us in locating a number of people," said DeKalb County Director of Public Safety William Miller.

Monday night, after an eight-hour standoff, SWAT teams breached a door at the Travel Inn on Forrest Hills Drive in Atlanta and arrested Cutez Johnson, 16, and his brother, Oshlushla Smith, 19.

An unidentified woman in the room was also taken into custody and her 5-year-old son was reunited with extended family.

Smith, Johnson and another teenager, Kemontay Cullins, have been charged with murder.

Police said 10 days ago the three teens killed Michael Phillips, which investigators said set off a series of events and retaliatory acts that led to the deaths of a woman, who was killed sometime before May 10, and a 9-month-old child, who police said was killed during a home invasion Saturday.

"The gunmen kicked their way into the backdoor of the house, I believe came up the stairs and kicked their door in there in the bathroom and opened fire at point blank range onto those innocent people killing that child," said Miller.

Police said Kayla Dixon is facing murder charges connected to the second homicide. Investigators hope Monday night's arrests have moved them one step closer to closing the case.

"This is very real and we are determined and we are going to be relentless in finding those that were involved in this," said Miller.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Cullins appeared in front of a judge for the first time since he was arrested. He is due back in court June 30.
