DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

On 2nd Avenue in Decatur you will see a store front with an Erie glow. What looks like lights inside of rocks have an illumination all their own.

These are Himalayan salt lamps.

And they were just the ticket for client Jeff Richie, who said he has six such lamps at home.

"I've had asthma and migraine headaches all my life. And I heard this was a possibility of helping those out. And since we've had the lamps in the house - we've had them for a year - I have not had a bad migraine in that period of time and I have not had an asthma attack," Richie said.

Jennifer Norwood owns the shop that stocks the lamps, called Salinity, and said clients keep coming back for more.

"It can almost, virtually eliminate the dust in your home after having the right sized lamp in the right sized room," she said.

The secret is in the salt, Norwood said.

"It is not from the sea. It is mined from the Himalayan mountains and then sent straight to us. So it's in it's purest form," she explained

Another useful aspect of salt has to do with relaxation and what you inhale, so Salinity also has a salt bed.

"While you're laying in this bed, you're inhaling this dry salt and it's going in and it's going to work like a toothbrush to fully get rid of any excess mucus that you have trapped in your throat, your lungs, your sinuses," said Norwood.

Some customers also swear that a teaspoon of saltwater each day can work magic. Jeff Richie said it can make a big difference.

"For me personally, my cholesterol is down 75 points and my sugar is way down," he said.

Norwood suggest patients placed on a salt free diet consult their doctor, because some do allow this type of salt.
