HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - One child was killed, and three others were seriously injured in a wreck in front of Hampton Cove Elementary School.
Police said four kids and a woman were in a black Yukon that was involved in the collision with an 18-wheel dump truck around 2 p.m. Monday.
A 5-year-old child was killed and two other children remain in Huntsville Hospital. A third child suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to a hospital in Birmingham. Their ages range from 3 to 9-years-old.
"I heard the impact and the next thing I saw was the truck in the air," said Jacquelyn Butler, who was driving ahead of the SUV.
The children's mother had serious injuries. All of the victims were taken to the hospital.
As ambulances rushed from the scene, the adults that helped pull the children out barely held it together. TJ Lee's friend assisted.
"He had to take his children and go home because he was just torn up. A very traumatic experience," Lee said.
Police said the SUV pulled out in front of the 18-wheeler. It landed on its top, leaving the passenger side crushed.
The wreck shut down the eastbound lanes of Old Highway 431 in front of the school for several hours Monday.
The logo on the side of the truck is from Double L Farms LLC. The company, located in Albertville, has undergone a total of nine inspections. The only flags on their file involve vehicle maintenance. The DOT has no records of unsafe driving.
Emergency responders said the driver did not go to the hospital. A preliminary investigation shows the truck driver was not at fault of the accident. They stressed that the investigation is still ongoing.
