FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) - A company letter is sparking concern in the Shoals. Several viewers contacted us about the letter. Employees at Hillshire Brands said they were told to sign a confidentiality agreement not to work for another plant in the area, or they would lose their incentive package.
Hillshire Brands said they made a mistake. A company spokesperson acknowledged the mistake in the letter and said the company is working to fix the issue with the separation agreements.
In a statement from Hillshire Brands they said, "The company incorrectly included a 'non-compete' clause." The company determined that the language in question was not applicable to hourly employees, and has chosen to reissue these notices without the "non-compete" language to avoid any confusion.
In April, Hillshire announced their decision to close their Florence plant, leaving an estimated 1,100 people without a job by the end of the year.
Officials with Hillshire said they support their employees' efforts to find new jobs. They said employees will receive their benefits as long as they remain employed with Hillshire until their official separation date from the company, meaning whenever they are officially let go.
If you are an employee at Hillshire, remember the Shoals Chamber is holding a job fair specifically for you at the end of the month. It will be held at the Florence Coliseum.
