COLLINSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Collinsville Police are warning residents of a scam that has taken at least one woman for more than $300.

Assistant Police Chief Rex Leath said the scammers contact citizens, claiming to be the police department. The caller says the person is wanted for fraud and if they don't pay $1,000, they will go to jail.

One woman sent $315 to the scammers, and they called her again the next day. That time, she did not send money and went to the police department.

They determined that when the scammers place a call, it looks like it's coming from the police department or the district attorney's office.

The Collinsville Police Department wants to spread the word about the scam to make sure no more citizens fall victim to it. They said they do not solicit money over the phone.
