A Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster recovery center opened Thursday night in Limestone County.

The center is at Riddle's Hall on Ripley Road.

Beginning Friday, it will operate within normal business hours, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

It is a sort of one-stop-shop; the center will provide services like help with FEMA applications, guidance for disaster recovery, housing assistance, rental resource information, and more.

It is likely many Limestone County storm victims will drop by the center to speak with FEMA representatives as they continue to salvage what they can from their properties.

Steve Pendergrass and his wife weathered the storm in the closet of their old apartment on Seven Mile Post Road.

"The pressure of the wind, you could feel it," Pendergrass said. "Whenever we opened the door and looked out at the devastation... oh, man, we just couldn't believe it."

They made it through without a scratch, as did many of their belongings. However, their home is uninhabitable, their future uncertain.

"We are here to help the people of Alabama for as long as we are needed," said FEMA representative Paula Shaw.

Anyone with tornado-damaged property in Limestone County can apply. A list of questions and a visit from a FEMA inspector will determine eligibility.

"If it's their primary residence, if they are homeowners or renters, if they had insurance... those are some of the factors we look at," explained Shaw.

Pendergrass doesn't know if his family will receive the money, but said it will make a huge difference if they do.

"Life can change in a split-second, and as you can see, it's changed," he said.
