HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Many people came together Wednesday night to honor the memory of fallen officers in Madison County.

The annual memorial service was held on the south side of the courthouse square in Downtown Huntsville. It included songs and talks from various city and law enforcement leaders.

Since 1880, 22 officers have died in the line of duty in Madison County. Officials said it is important to remember those officers.

"If you go by and look at the wall, there's 22 names," said ceremony chairman Donny Shaw. "Tonight we're going to tell the story behind every one of those names. You'll go away with an understanding of who that person was and how they died in the line of duty serving Madison County."

The event concluded with a candlelight vigil.

The Alabama Fraternal Order of Police will hold its memorial service Friday morning in Montgomery.
