Athens closes road for debris removal

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

The City of Athens will close Lucas Ferry Road between West Hobbs Street and Market Street on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to around noon for storm debris removal.

Limestone County received a federal disaster declaration as a result of the April 28 tornadoes.

Federal assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans for uninsured property loss and other programs to benefit individuals and businesses in recovering from the disaster.

If you are interested in applying for assistance, you have several methods available to you:

Toll-free numbers will operate from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week until further notice.

    Our news gathering partner at the Decatur Times Daily reports the city of Sheffield in Colbert County is dealing with a staffing shortage in their fire department.  Fire Chief Dewey King, who is also the city's public safety director, says that low wages are contributing to a high turnover rate.
