A reported sexual assault in Cahaba Heights has an apartment community on edge.

The Vestavia Hills Police Department says it happened over the weekend at The Crowne Apartments at Overton.

"We've always felt really safe. It's a lot of like women and older couples. So we just really haven't worried about it in the past. And that's what makes this even more scary," explained one apartment resident who spoke with FOX6 News but asked to not be identified.

She recently learned that over the weekend, one of her neighbors was allegedly raped inside her apartment.

"I feel so terrible for her. I can't even imagine what she's going through. To not feel safe in your own home is pretty much the worst feeling imaginable," the resident said.

According to Vestavia Hills Police, it happened Saturday around 7 a.m. The department has launched an investigation.

"It's just really pretty terrifying," added the concerned apartment resident.

She says she saw a letter from management outside her apartment door Tuesday afternoon.

"It said that there's an alleged assault somewhere on the property. And the problem with that is that is that it doesn't explain what happened, where it was, what's going to be the safety issues from now on," she said.

The letter encourages residents to take certain precautions like locking doors and report any suspicious activity. But in the meantime, this neighbor says she doesn't want to take any chances.

"I may have a guy friend come over and stay or we are trying to figure out what to do at this point because we won't feel safe in our apartment tonight," she said.

Vestavia Hills Police are only describing the suspect as a Hispanic man, about 6' with short hair.

The department hopes to release more information Wednesday. FOX6 News's calls to the apartment's management office have not been returned as of Tuesday night.
