BYRAM, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A rally was held Tuesday evening for a coach who died Monday after a weekend altercation with a referee who was an off duty Hinds County deputy.

Nearly 100 family and friends of Justin Griffin gathered at his Byram home today to share that they want the community to know that he was non-violent and a mentor to young men.

The 25 year old died Monday after suffering a head injury Sunday following a basketball game he coached at Mississippi Basketball and Athletics.

His parents, James and Cynthia Griffin, say they have seen surveillance video that showed Justin leaving the gym being followed by off duty HInds county deputy Josh Adams. The 37 year old Adams was refereeing a game that Griffin coached.

His best friend and coach Julian Pickett said he witnessed Adams and another deputy who acted as security slam Griffin to the ground after he tried to walk away.

Pickett says Griffin was punched by Adams and left unconscious.

"When he hit him I pulled out my phone and began to video," said Pickett. "And I see my friend hit the ground and I hear this guy say 'sorry, write a report, say he attacked an officer.'"

"We raised our kid, and he was a good kid and those thugs that were supposed to protect him, they killed him," said James Griffin.

Josh Adams is charged with Griffin's murder. He was denied bond.

Hinds county Sheriff's Department Spokesman Othor Cain says Adams is on unpaid administrative leave.
