HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg city council has unanimously approved a resolution with the intent to continue the two percent hotel tax for three more years.

According to the resolution, Mississippi House Bill 1642 allows citizens the opportunity to petition this tax before it takes effect. It would require 20 percent of voters- or 1,500, whichever is less- to stop the extension of the tax.

If there is no petition or if it does not meet requirements, the two percent tax will automatically continue starting July 1 of this year until July 1, 2017.
