Jackson doctor charged with murder now hospitalized

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Jackson eye doctor accused of shooting his wife to death has been taken to a hospital. Sixty-eight year old Dr. William Mayfield is charged with shooting Susan Mayfield to death at their northeast Jackson home.

Dr. Mayfield was transferred to St. Dominic hospital Saturday. He was reportedly found non-responsive in jail where he has been held with no bond according to his defense attorney Tuesday.

"This past weekend he was found to be non-responsive in the jail and for that reason he was transferred to the hospital," said Cynthia Speetjens, his attorney. "He was found to be in acute renal failure. He's being treated presently by his existing team of doctors at St. Dominic's hospital."

Speetjens says Mayfield is in stable condition.

The retired physician allegedly shot and killed his wife inside their St. Andrews Drive home. The couple was described as very close and loving. His attorney says the physician suffered from Parkinson's disease and the disturbance may have stemmed from medications he was prescribed.

"I have to rely on what I'm hearing from others," said Speetjens. "Which is all consistent and that this is a medical condition gone horribly awry. I'm not a doctor. I'll have to wait for doctors reports about that, but I have seen nothing in my observations of him that would contradict that assumption."

Speetjens believes Dr. Mayfield was not competent when he shot his wife. She considers the shooting, a tragedy in it's purest form.
