Some storm victims could be eligible for tax relief

ALABAMA (WAFF) -

Some victims of the April 28 storms may be eligible for tax relief from the IRS as the agency announced it will extend several deadlines.

President Obama issued disaster declarations for Limestone, Jefferson, Lee and Baldwin Counties. That declaration allows the IRS to extend several deadlines for people who live or have a business in those affected areas.

Certain deadlines that fall on or after April 28 have now been postponed until October 15. This includes the May 15 deadline for many tax-exempt organizations to file their annual Form 990. The agency has also postponed a variety of business tax deadlines that include the April 30 and July 31 deadlines for quarterly payroll and excise tax returns.

In addition, the IRS is waiving the failure-to-deposit penalties for employment and excise tax deposits due on or after April 28 and on or before May 13, as long as the deposits are made by May 13.

If you live in the affected areas and receive a late notice from the IRS, you should call the number on the notice for further instructions.

You can find a complete list of other deadline extensions and other tax relief opportunities here.
