ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Athens Utilities worked non-stop following the severe weather that struck Monday. A 12-mile path along US 72 in Limestone County was lined with debris and first responders working in shifts around the clock.

An EF-3 tornado touched down in Limestone County and traveled through Athens. It left 16,000 customers without power and destroyed over 200 utility poles. Crews immediately began to de-energize downed power lines to clear the way for rescue workers.

Athens Utilities received help from numerous other crews for the monumental task. Crews faced many difficult challenges, and were able to overcome them through the assistance of Athens City Public Works, Athens Fire and Rescue, Limestone County Commission Districts, and volunteer fire departments who cut and removed trees and limbs from power lines, utility structures, and roads.

Poplar Creek Substation sustained extensive damage during the tornado. It was reenergized Thursday morning at 1 a.m. It allowed Athens Utilities to begin restoration of lines and utility structures in the hardest hit areas west of Athens.

Crews will continue to work around the clock until power is restored to all customers. Gary Scroggins, Athens Utilities General Manager, provided Limestone County EMA with a rough estimate of $3 million in damages, manpower, and equipment.
